Microsoft Reading Coach

What it does

Students read aloud into a microphone and Reading Coach gives results on pronunciation accuracy, reading time and words to practice, with a Word Practice step for the five most challenging words. Passages can be an AI-generated story (students pick a character, setting and reading level, choose what happens in each chapter, and later chapters include the words they struggled with), a ReadWorks library passage, or text the student pastes in. Immersive Reader is built in. Teachers with school accounts can share a passage or a time-goal practice by link or code and track average correct words per minute and accuracy.

Elementary and middle school teachers who want independent oral reading fluency practice, including for emerging readers and students who benefit from Immersive Reader supports.

Free, with a Microsoft school account or a personal Microsoft account, on the web or the Windows app (per coach.microsoft.com and Microsoft Education, checked 2026-11-03).

Limitation

It builds oral reading fluency, not comprehension, so it doesn't replace questions about the text. Students need a microphone and a quiet place to read aloud. The teacher features (shared practices and progress data) require school Microsoft Entra ID accounts for teacher and students in the same Microsoft 365 tenant.
