What this quiz should check
Topic: Text structure: chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution (RI.4.5). A good grade 4 quiz on this asks students to:
- Identify chronology, comparison, cause/effect and problem/solution structures in a text or part of a text
- Use signal words such as first, then, similarly, however, because, as a result and one solution as evidence
- Match each structure to a graphic organizer
- Explain how knowing the structure helps a reader understand the text
Misconceptions worth a question
- Choosing a structure from a single signal word instead of the whole passage
- Confusing cause/effect with problem/solution
- Confusing text features (headings, captions) with text structure
Teacher tip: Have the AI write one short original passage per structure on the same topic so students compare structures without topic changes getting in the way, and add an item where a passage mixes two structures.
Always check the AI's answer key before you give the quiz to students.
