What this quiz should check
Topic: Determining a central idea and writing an objective summary (RI.6.2). A good grade 6 quiz on this asks students to:
- State a central idea of an informational text in a complete sentence
- Choose the particular details that best convey that central idea
- Tell the topic of a text apart from its central idea
- Write a short summary that leaves out personal opinions and judgments
Misconceptions worth a question
- Giving the topic ("volcanoes") instead of a central idea about it
- Retelling every detail in order instead of summarizing
- Slipping opinions into a summary ("this interesting article")
Teacher tip: Ask the AI to write one short original article first and base every item on it, and include a question that shows two summaries and asks which one is objective and why.
Always check the AI's answer key before you give the quiz to students.
Teach it first
Plan the lesson on the same standard: objective, practice, differentiation and an exit ticket.
