Planning notes for this lesson
Prerequisite skills to check: finding two or more main ideas of a text and explaining how key details support them (RI.5.2); summarizing a text (RI.5.2); telling facts from opinions.
Warm-up idea: Read two summaries of the same short article: one sticks to the text, the other adds "this was boring" and "the author is wrong." Ask students which one a reader who never saw the article could trust, and why.
Exit ticket idea: Students read a short informational article, write its central idea in one sentence, list the three details that best convey it, and write a summary of four sentences or fewer that contains no opinions or judgments.
Always check the AI's plan and answers before you teach.
