Grade 4 Math lesson plan: Multi-digit multiplication

Topic: Multiplying multi-digit whole numbers with area models and partial products (4.NBT.B.5). Adjust the settings, then copy the prompt.

Don't type student names or personal info. This site never sends your prompt anywhere; you paste it into the AI tool yourself.

Planning notes for this lesson

Prerequisite skills to check: fluently multiplying and dividing within 100 (3.OA.C.7); multiplying one-digit numbers by multiples of 10 (3.NBT.A.3); using the distributive property to break apart a factor (3.OA.B.5).

Key vocabulary: factor, product, partial product, area model, expanded form, place value, distributive property, estimate.

Warm-up idea: Show a 23-by-14 rectangle of graph paper and ask how many squares it holds without counting one by one. Let students argue about where to cut it, then cut it into 20 + 3 by 10 + 4 and add the four pieces.

Exit ticket idea: Students solve 3 x 1,246 and 36 x 52 with an area model, write the matching partial-products equation for each, and use an estimate to say whether a classmate's answer of 1,772 for 36 x 52 is reasonable.

Always check the AI's plan and answers before you teach.
