What this quiz should check
Topic: Writing and evaluating expressions with variables (6.EE.A.2). A good grade 6 quiz on this asks students to:
- Write an expression from words, such as "subtract y from 5" as 5 - y
- Name the parts of an expression: sum, term, product, factor, quotient and coefficient
- Evaluate an expression for a given value of the variable, following the order of operations
- Use a formula such as A = 6s² for real-world problems
Misconceptions worth a question
- Writing 5 - y as y - 5 for "subtract y from 5"
- Reading 3x as 3 + x, or 2x when x = 4 as 24
- Ignoring the order of operations when evaluating, such as 2 + 3x as 5x
Teacher tip: Include the standard's own example, "subtract y from 5", plus one item where order matters ("5 less than n" is n - 5). The wording mix-up is the most common error.
Always check the AI's answer key before you give the quiz to students.
Teach it first
Plan the lesson on the same standard: objective, practice, differentiation and an exit ticket.
