What this quiz should check
Topic: Analyze and solve pairs of simultaneous linear equations (8.EE.C.8). A good grade 8 quiz on this asks students to:
- Explain that the solution of a system is the point that makes both equations true, and that it is where the graphs intersect (8.EE.C.8a)
- Solve a system of two linear equations by graphing, substitution or elimination
- Decide whether a system has one solution, no solution or infinitely many solutions from equations or a graph
- Write and solve a system for a real-world situation with two unknowns
Misconceptions worth a question
- Thinking any intersection on the axes is the solution, instead of the intersection of the two lines
- Mixing up 'no solution' (parallel lines) with 'infinitely many' (same line)
- Substituting into the same equation they just rearranged, instead of the other equation
Teacher tip: 8.EE.C.8a ties the algebra to the graph, so tell the AI to include at least one 'match the system to the graph' item and one item that asks for no solution or infinitely many solutions.
Always check the AI's answer key before you give the quiz to students.
