What this quiz should check
Topic: Linear and nonlinear functions (8.F.A.3). A good grade 8 quiz on this asks students to:
- Interpret y = mx + b as a linear function whose graph is a straight line
- Decide from a table whether the rate of change is constant
- Identify linear and nonlinear functions from equations, tables and graphs
- Give an example of a nonlinear function, such as A = s² for the area of a square
Misconceptions worth a question
- Thinking any equation with x and y is linear, including y = x² or y = 1/x
- Checking only the first two rows of a table instead of every interval
- Missing that the x-values in a table skip unevenly, which can hide or fake a constant rate
Teacher tip: Function notation is not required in grade 8, so tell the AI to write rules as y = ... and to describe each graph in words (for example, "a straight line through (0, 2) and (3, 8)") so items still work on paper.
Always check the AI's answer key before you give the quiz to students.
