Grade 3 ELA lesson plan: Context clues

Topic: Using sentence-level context clues to find the meaning of unknown words (L.3.4a). Adjust the settings, then copy the prompt.

Don't type student names or personal info. This site never sends your prompt anywhere; you paste it into the AI tool yourself.

Print lesson plan

Paste the lesson plan the AI gives you, check it, then print. It prints black on white with no menus or buttons, and the student handout starts on its own page.

Planning notes for this lesson

Prerequisite skills to check: reading grade-level sentences fluently; knowing that some words have more than one meaning; using pictures and other words to figure out new words (L.2.4a).

Key vocabulary: context clue, unknown word, definition clue, example clue, synonym clue, antonym clue, multiple-meaning word.

Warm-up idea: Write a sentence with a made-up word on the board: "The glorp was so heavy that Max needed both hands and a wagon to move it." Ask what a glorp could be and which words in the sentence helped them guess.

Exit ticket idea: Students read four sentences with an underlined word, circle the clue words in each sentence, write what they think the word means, and name the type of clue (definition, example, synonym or antonym) they used.

Always check the AI's plan and answers before you teach.
