Grade 5 Math lesson plan: Volume of rectangular prisms

Topic: Volume of rectangular prisms with unit cubes and V = l x w x h (5.MD.C.5). Adjust the settings, then copy the prompt.

Don't type student names or personal info. This site never sends your prompt anywhere; you paste it into the AI tool yourself.

Paste the lesson plan the AI gives you, check it, then print. It prints black on white with no menus or buttons, and the student handout starts on its own page.

Planning notes for this lesson

Prerequisite skills to check: multiplying whole numbers fluently (5.NBT.B.5); finding the area of a rectangle by multiplying side lengths (3.MD.C.7); recognizing volume as an attribute of solid figures measured in unit cubes (5.MD.C.3-4).

Key vocabulary: volume, unit cube, cubic unit, rectangular prism, base, height, length, width, edge.

Warm-up idea: Hold up two cereal boxes with different shapes and ask which holds more. Let students guess, then fill a small box with centimeter cubes one layer at a time and count the layers.

Exit ticket idea: Students find the volume of a 4 x 3 x 5 prism two ways (layers of the base times the height, and l x w x h), then find the total volume of an L-shaped figure made of two prisms and explain where they split it.

Always check the AI's plan and answers before you teach.
